MPhil By Thesis students submit their thesis in early June, during the Easter term. The thesis requires original research on a topic of the student’s choosing, demonstrating scholarship in one or more of the fields represented by Film and Screen Studies, and on a scale commensurate with a full eight-month period of focused research. Students are entitled to seven hours of supervision throughout the course.

The developed thesis proposal and outline plan is submitted in Michaelmas term, with the submission of a portion of the thesis following early in Lent. The provisional thesis title and summary are submitted later in Lent term.

Each element of the assessment is scrutinised independently by two examiners, at least one of whom is external to the University. The viva voce examination takes place in late June.
